The argument as to whether long-range hunting is real sporting is a timeless debate. For starters. What is the definition of a long-range shot? Is it 500 yards? 800 yards? What is considered long-range bow hunting? The answer is different depending on who you ask, and that hunters skill set.

Personal perspectives on long-range

Everyone’s perspective on what long-range means and whether or not it’s ethical varies depending on who you’re talking too. For me, 500 yards is a hell of a shot with a rifle. And, anyone who can consistently hit a 10 ring at 100 yards with a bow has my attention.

That said, when it comes to big game hunting, I am a die-hard archery hunter who manages just one 3-day rifle hunt in Texas a year. (Things have changed since I now live in Western Colorado)

Mark, the owner of IN-RUT, has a bit different perspective as to what “long-range hunting” means to him. As an avid hunter and long-range shooter Mark’s perspective, along with fellow long-range shooters have no issues taking an animal effectively and ethically at ranges up to 800 yards.

Why? It’s simple really, they’ve been doing it for 30+ years. They have spent more rounds in a year maybe even months than what most people do in a lifetime. Practice, consistency, discipline, confidence, lots of time and the right equipment make these shots possible.

But it’s still 800 yards?

I’ll admit when I first got into the big game hunting scene, I hunted with a bow only and didn’t take my first rifle deer until 5 years later. I never cared to rifle hunt in my younger years as I was one of those “Bow hunt or die”, rifle hunting sucks kind of guys. Naïve I know. But, with age, I realized, what’s the difference between a bow hunter shooting an elk or a mule deer at 100+ yards and a guy shooting a high-powered rifle from 700 yards away?

Ballistics don’t lie.

For our bullet vs arrow ballistics comparison, we are going to use Field & Streams 100-yard arrow ballistic results and ballistics from a 28 Nosler shooting a 160 Grain AccuBond bullet.

Archery Equipment: Bowtech RPM 360 at 70lbs, with a Carbon Express Maxima Red finished hunting arrow weighing 417 grains. A little lighter for elk (But doable), but more than enough for mule deer.

Rifle Equipment: IN-RUT Full Curl in 28 Nosler shooting a 160 Grain AccuBond bullet. Perfect for all North American Big Game.

There’s a big difference in numbers.

Colorado Parks & Wildlife “recommends” a minimum of 1000 ft/lbs of energy to take down an elk. So, theoretically, archers with a relatively similar set up to the one above is only at 1/10th (94 ft/lbs) of Colorado’s recommended ft/lbs to take down an elk at 10 YARDS!

According to the ballistics above, a rifle, even at 800 yards is going to be more lethal (Assuming it’s a vital shot) than a bow ever will be. So, who’s unethical now?

Who determines what is considered ethical long-range hunting?

This is up to you. While states have specific regulations on certain types of ammo and minimum requirements, there aren’t any requirements on the range. How far you determine is ethical comes down to your own personal preference and hunting skillset.

With my skill set, 400 yards with a rifle is pushing it when it comes to harvesting an animal. With a bow, I am comfortable up to 60 yards on a deer and 80 on an elk. Those are my comfort levels and what I am confident at, and I know for a fact that my ethical range is different than the next guys. This will also change in time the more that I practice and more effective I get.

It’s up to you to determine what’s ethical and isn’t.

What’s makes long-range hunting ethical?

Practice makes perfect.

Practice makes perfect right? Wrong, but it sure does help. Hunters who practice monthly, weekly and even daily have no issues shooting an elk or mule deer at 800 yards and sometimes it seems they can do it with their eyes closed because it’s second nature.

The more time spent at the range the better you will get at long-range shooting and the tighter your groups will get at further distances.

Confidence is key.

This should be the number one contributing factor as to whether a hunter will make that 700+ yard shot or release that arrow at over 100 yards, but it’s not. Without practice, you won’t have the confidence needed to make the shot.

With all the factors that go into the next second of the hunt after you release that arrow or fire that bullet, confidence is key. Practicing real-life scenarios is a great way to prepare and make sure that when the time comes your true to your aim and you make a clean and ethical shot.

Use your knowledge

Knowing how to manage the wind and other elements is a key factor in long-range hunting, especially the farther out you range. Not understanding how wind and weather can affect bullet or arrow flight is ignorance and can ultimately cause the wounding and waste of precious meat.

What makes long-range hunting unethical?

Time To Target

The further out you get the longer it takes for your bullet or arrow to hit it’s target. A perfect example would be a deer jumping or “ducking the string”. Anyone who’s bow hunted long enough has probably had this happen, and it happens all the time in under 40 yards.

Now, double the distance and time, factor in the weather conditions and on paper an 80-yard shot would be UNETHICAL in some people’s minds. But, take a hunter who shoots daily, practices in hunting situations and knows how to time a shot and this shot can become an Ethical one. A lot can happen in a short period of time.

Locating Your Game

One issue you can run into at further distances is losing sight of your game after the shot. Some long-range hunters can easily mistake a bad shot for a missed shot at 700 yards. The longer distance, adrenaline, and vibrations from the shooting will make it harder to see whether you had a solid hit or miss.

Make It Ethical: Having a spotter when shooting at greater distances will make for a more ethical shot. With the second set of eyes focusing on nothing but the animal, the hunter can focus on the shot and not so much about what happens after or where that animal goes.

Spotters can also focus 100% on where that animal was standing during the shot making it easier to find the start of the blood trail.

Draw your own ethical conclusion.

At the end of the day, whether a shot is ethical or unethical is up to you. Everyone’s opinion will be different and there will always be someone to argue with you about how that 700+ yard shot you took on that elk was unethical even though he dropped where he stood.

The bottom line is, animals are animals. They aren’t targets and any true hunter will be sickened at the thought of losing or wasting meat because they made an unethical or rushed shot. Sadly, it happens all the time and to say that most hunters haven’t made at least one unethical shot in their lifetime would be a lie. Accidents happen. . .

There is no real answer to the age-old question, and if you’re a long-range hunter who can make those long shots, more power to you. You also probably come home with a lot more meat than I do.

Practice, discipline, knowledge, and confidence will help improve your long-range hunting distance year by year. What’s ethical or not ultimately comes down to what your limits are and how confident you are at them.

It doesn’t matter if it is your first deer hunt or number one hundred, choosing the best hunting rifle that fits your style of hunting and the game that you’re chasing it paramount. At IN-RUT Rifles, we build and repair a lot of custom hunting rifles for hunters around the globe. When choosing the best hunting rifle for your task on hand, we suggest you base the start of your search off of the criteria listed below. While every hunter is different and has different needs, these basics are a good place for anyone to start.

1. Do plenty of online and in-person research.

Buying a hunting rifle means doing research and reading hunting rifle reviews before you head out to shop. Decide which models you’d like to look at, then read up on them. Consult manufacturer websites and online forums. Use other information sources as well, hunting forums are a great place to start, but make sure to read reviews thoroughly as some companies “Sponsor” these forums and get biased reviews. Talk to knowledgeable friends or ask a gunsmith you trust if he has any opinions about a particular rifle. Trust me, he will!

Make sure to check out our show schedule so you can check out our custom hunting rifles when we are at a trade show near you!

2. Choose the right rifle cartridge for your target species

With so many factors influencing your rifle cartridge selection, it is important to understand the minute details of each that will affect your choice. Bullets come in all kinds of different sizes, but the two most common measurements are inches and millimeters.

Things to consider. . .

Penetration
This refers to the bullet’s ability to go deep into the animal’s vitals, preferably all the way through, exiting on the other side.

Placement
This is by far the most important factor in ethically killing any animal. A poorly placed shot with a high power, the high-speed cartridge will likely result in a wounded and lost animal.

Wound Channel
This is another necessary factor. The wound channel is the damage that is caused as the bullet passes through the body cavity. It does not make a clean hole, but instead makes a ragged, expanded chasm through its path. The larger the bullet the larger the wound channel.

You’ll need to think ahead if you’re going to be hunting very large game, as you may need a rifle you won’t find in a basic hunting collection. If you’re new to hunting or are looking for a basic hunting setup, consider a gun that’s designed to shoot a .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester or .270 Winchester.

3. Choose an action that fits your needs

The rifle action is responsible for kicking out fired cartridges and loading new cartridges into a rifle’s chamber. When it comes to actions, hunting rifles are designed to fire either single shots or repeat shots. Choosing the right type of action is largely a matter of preference. Some hunters like single-shot rifles, which increase the pressure to make an accurate shot the first time. Others prefer repeating rifles, which decrease pressure and are an ideal choice for newer hunters.

You’ll find hunting rifles at a variety of price points, which is good news. However, it’s essential to know what sets the good-but-affordable rifles apart from the just-plain-cheap rifles. You can avoid a bad investment by choosing the right barrel and stock materials.

Most hunting rifles feature either stainless steel or carbon steel for the barrel and other metal components. All IN-RUT Rifles use stainless steel barrels as it’s more prone to rust than stainless steel. If you keep up on regular rifle maintenance, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker. When it comes to choosing stock for your custom rifle, you’ll likely be able to choose from wood or fiberglass. Both are good choices so long as they’re well maintained. At IN-RUT, we choose fiberglass as it is a lighter option, and when lugging around a rifle 5 miles in the backcountry, every ounce counts. When it comes to wood, it’s also important that you choose a good species.

You can check out the breakdown of an IN-RUT Rifle on our rifle tech page. Here you can see a complete breakdown of our custom hunting rifles and the components we use to make your custom one of a kind hunting rifle.

5. Budget for rifle optics

Many a hunter has fallen into the trap of buying a great rifle and then having no money left for a rifle scope. Think ahead and budget for your optics so that you’re not stuck with a rifle you can’t use. In terms of budgeting, you can plan to spend between 50 and 100 percent of what you spent on your rifle on a scope. If you already have a suitable scope, remember to mount it, site it and get comfortable with it before you head out to hunt.

IN-RUT Custom Hunting Rifles

With originality, quality and accuracy, IN-RUT Rifles – remains committed to its primary goal of providing the shooting sports industry with innovative products and services, using world-class manufacturing techniques and proprietary technology. Setting our custom rifle quality, accuracy, and service standards higher than our competition ensures that you, the customer, receive the highest quality custom hunting rifle available anywhere.

A matched ballistic turret for your individual rifle is the final component of an IN-RUT Custom Deer Hunting Rifle System.

We start by pillar bedding every stock and are machined specifically to the dimensions of the barreled action it will be used with. Both sides of the mold are hand laminated with Kevlar, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. We use an abundant amount of these materials for added strength and durability. Next, we inject the mold with a proprietary mixture of a dense polyurethane foam material.

Let’s say you are in the market for a high-quality long range optic. Maybe you are a hunter on the plains of the midwest, or a you’re a beginning competition shooter looking into the sport, or maybe you are just a hand loader who wants to mix up his own long range formula. Whatever the reason you’re shooting long range, you need something that is going to allow you to stretch the legs of your rifle a bit.

When it comes to long-range shooting you can’t go cheap and expect the best results, you will need to spend a little bit of money, and if you are spending some of your cold hard cash you need to be aware of what a solid long range optic needs to succeed.

The Right Scope For The Hunt

The average deer rifle used to wear a 3-9 scope, and for good reason. Three power is low enough, with a large enough exit pupil and field of view for close shots in most applications, and nine power gives you plenty of magnification for longer shots.

A major percentage of people now want to choose scopes for whitetail deer with top magnifications of fourteen, or twenty, or even more. This is, more often than not, a mistake. Less is more. Use the kiss principle. Bells and whistles like giant turrets, lighted reticles, and bubble levels are often a waste, particularly in lower priced offerings.

To have them in a scope costs more and gives you a less usable, less reliable, and more complicated product. You have enough to do without troubling over how to work your scope. Quality scopes have quality attributes that can be relied on.

In a 3-9X40 scope, the 3 means three power, or 3X. This means that the image you see through the scope appears three times (3X) closer than it does with your naked eye. The 9 means nine power, or nine times (9X) closer than it appears with your naked eye. The forty (40) is the objective lens diameter in millimeters. This is a variable scope because you can vary the magnification of the scope from three to nine, stopping anywhere in between. You would describe this scope as a “three to nine by forty.” Some scopes have a 3x magnification range such as a 3-9. Some have 4 or more as in a 4-12. Some new scopes have a magnification range of 8x or more. The larger the magnification range the more you will pay, but it makes for a more versatile scope. I’ve been spoiled by them.

Most scopes, especially in America have main tubes that are one inch in diameter. That means that they use one inch rings. Some scopes have thirty millimeter main tubes. Those scopes will use thirty millimeter rings. There are several main types of bases that are used to connect the rings to your firearm. You need to know what kind of base you have to find out the exact type of the one inch or thirty millimeter rings you will use for your specific scope.

Scopes don’t gather light, as most people think, although the term “light gathering ability” has become accepted jargon. Scopes transmit available light through the lenses to your eye, always losing a bit in the process. The best a scope can hope to offer in light transmission is about a theoretical 98%, which only the very finest (read expensive) scopes can hope to approach. Anything above 95% is considered great, and most scopes are around 90%, give or take a bit. You have to take light transmission figures with a grain of salt. Manufacturers measure light transmission differently, sometimes for specific wavelengths to boost their numbers.

The more magnification you have, the less light you get to your eyepiece. The larger the objective lens, the more you get through your eyepiece.

A formula for exit pupil is as follows: Divide the objective lens size in millimeters by the magnification. Example: if your 3-9X40 scope is set at 3X, 40 divided by 3 equals 13.3 millimeters, which is large enough for almost all low light applications. If your scope is set at 9X, 40 divided by 9 equals 4.44 millimeters. The difference in available light from the larger exit pupil is significant.

The larger the exit pupil, the less critical the position of your head in relation to the scope is, also. The distance that your eye must be to the ocular lens to get a full, clear picture is called eye relief. Lower powered scopes will have a larger range of distance available for a full view. Higher powered scopes are sometimes very critical in relation to the centering of your eye through the middle of the tube, and the distance your eye must be from the ocular lens. Sometimes there is only a half inch closer or farther you may be to see the whole available view.

As we have already discussed, a scope in the 3-9 magnification range for a whitetail deer gun is pretty standard. In Western states for mule deer or antelope, a 4-12 or 4.4-14 is not too much, especially when your average shot is many times as long as it would be in the eastern whitetail woods. On the plains or in open country you can even leave your scope at a higher power. You can often see all around you, with little chance of an animal surprising you, which they seem to do occasionally, anyway. In some cases you might have to shoot from hilltop to hilltop, or mountain to mountain. Scopes in this magnification range are excellent for target shooting as well.

A great example we always use is prairie dog hunting or long range target shooting, a 6-20X or 8-25X variable scope does not have too much power. Keep in mind though, on hot days, mirage and heat waves can make a high power scope almost unusable. Some people prefer fixed power scopes for their simplicity and fewer moving parts. On some rifles, people like nothing more than a fixed 4X. Squirrel rifles and many .22s for plinking are well equipped with this magnification. Some target shooters use fixed power scopes with high magnification such as 24, 36, or 40 power.

Focal planes fall into two categories, front focal plane, and second focal plane. On front focal plane scopes the reticle will change size as the magnification increases or decreases. On second focal plane optics, the reticle remains the same size. Front focal plane scopes are better in my opinion because the dots or hash marks never change, they are always 1 MIL or 1 MOA apart. At the second focal plane, these dots or hash marks will need a specific zoom setting to be accurate.

Slide 6 Of 10

Scope Objective Lens Size And Tube Diameter

When it comes to Long Range Hunting and Long Range Rifles, 40 to 44mm is pretty standard on a medium variable rifle scope. It’s trendy these days to have large objective lenses of 50, 56, or even 75mm and more in some cases. In most cases, these are unwarranted, and the largest ones are laughable.

Large objective lenses will only transmit more useable light than smaller ones if they are set at their highest power in the dimmest conditions. The detriment is comfort and ease of eye alignment. With a properly mounted scope, you should be able to close your eyes, shoulder your gun with a proper, repeatable stock weld, open your eyes, and look directly through the center of your scope every time.

Large objective lenses prevent this from happening because of the ring height required to keep such a large lens off your gun barrel. Some scopes require such high mounting that only your chin touches the stock. These scopes are also heavier, clumsier, unwieldy, unbalanced to carry, slower and less comfortable to shoot. Some of these scopes weigh up to an unbelievable 3.5 pounds! Kind of like towing a motorcycle trailer or taping a bowling ball to your head.

The following are accepted terms for coatings:

Coated: A single layer on at least one lens surface.
Fully Coated: A single layer on all air to glass surfaces.
Multicoated: Multiple layers on at least one lens surface.
Fully Multicoated: Multiple layers on all air to glass surfaces.

Coatings reduce glare, and loss of light due to reflection. More coatings normally lead to better light transmission and sharper contrast. Many coatings are also scratch resistant.

Field of view (FOV) is measured in feet at 100 yards. This is the amount of view you see through your scope from right to left at that distance. As magnification is increased, FOV goes down. As magnification is decreased, FOV goes up. For instance, a typical 3X variable scope might have a FOV at 100 yards of a bit over 30 feet, and at 9X, the FOV would be around 14 feet. A larger objective lens diameter will not change these figures. Field of view is directly related to the construction of the eyepiece.

Adjustments are made in “Minutes of Angle” (MOA). This is a unit of measurement of a circle, and is 1.0472 at 100 yards. For all practical purposes it is called 1 inch at 100 yards. It is 2 inches at 200 yards, 5 inches at 500 yards, one half inch at 50 yards, etcetera.

Scope adjustments are most often made in A 1/4 inch increments at 100 yards. Each “click” of an elevation or windage turret will move your point of impact A 1/4 inch at 100 yards. That same A 1/4 inch click will move your point of impact 1/2 of an inch at 200 yards, or 1/8 inch at 50 yards. Some scopes have clicks that are 1/2 inch or even 1 inch. Some adjustment dials don’t have clicks at all, just a friction type adjustment that is infinitely adjustable.

If your bullet hole is four inches low at 100 yards and you have a scope with A 1/4 minute clicks, you need to adjust your dial in the direction of the “up” arrow on your turret 16 clicks. Or 8 clicks at 200 yards, or 32 clicks at 50 yards. This is depending on your bullet’s trajectory, of course.

The turrets are housed in the center of your scope tube in a protrusion called the turret housing. The turrets are sometimes made to be turned with a coin, and sometimes they are finger adjustable. Target turrets are tall, and the clicks are easily seen and felt. Target turrets are most suited to use where they won’t get banged around or snagged on gear or brush. This is why hunting scopes don’t have them, and instead are much lower profile.

If your scope is correctly mounted, using a boresighter should get you close enough to print a bullet hole on a large target at 50 yards. No boresighter, even a laser boresighter, will sight in your gun for you. You must shoot the gun and adjust your scope accordingly to sight it in. Every gun is an individual. No two are alike, even if the serial numbers are consecutive. If a particular gun shoots a certain kind of ammunition well, there’s absolutely no guarantee that an identical gun will like it at all.

If you mount a good scope on a good gun with good rings and bases, and find a certain kind of ammo that it shoots well, with a bullet that serves your purposes well, YOU WIN! Buy a case of the same exact ammo with the same lot number, keep it with the gun and don’t change a thing.

I would rather have a great scope than a great gun. Your gun will work when you pull the trigger, but if you can’t see where to place the bullet, the gun is useless. If you can’t rely on bullet placement, why even hunt or target shoot? I’ll never understand how people can take a week or more vacation, spend $1000.00 on a rifle, and sometimes thousands on a hunt, and buy a $150.00 scope mounted on $20.00 rings and bases. I know of many ruined hunts, countless dollars lost, and guns wrapped around trees because of faulty scopes.

Everyone has heard “You get what you pay for”, well it’s true. Spend as much as you can afford on your new rifle scope, and less on the firearm or something else if you have to, but get good glass you can count on, and learn how to use it well. Use a rangefinder if you want, but for long shots, you must know your bullet’s trajectory and be confident that you can place all your shots in the vital area of your quarry every time. You can’t shoot what you can’t see.

Nebraska Permit Requirements

Deer hunters in Nebraska are required to have a Statewide or Unit Deer Permit and a Habitat stamp. (view big game guide for exceptions) Deer permits are issued as Draw units or Buy units. Draw units are determined by overall demand and may be applied for during the draw unit application period. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission provides information on the previous year’s draw results. Buy units (over-the-counter permits) are issued on a first-come, first served basis. Additionally, youth permits are available to youth under the age of 16. (See the Big Game Guide for more on permits, unit names, species of deer and bag limits.) Before going out to hunt make sure to check out the Nebraska Parks & Wildlife Website to verify season dates.
New Mexico Open Gate Program

Open Gate is a voluntary access program available to outdoor users and landowners statewide. Its primary purpose is to provide more opportunities to hunt, fish and trap statewide. To accomplish this, NMDGF leases lands and waters from private landowners for a variety of unique hunting, fishing and trapping opportunities. Each property participating in Open Gate will have special rules for permitted activities agreed upon by the landowner and NMDGF. These rules will be posted on the property and are also available on the NMDGF website. Hunters, Anglers and trappers can use this information to locate and learn about properties that match their interests. It is the responsibility of the individual using the property to know and obey posted rules. Citations may be issued for violation of any rules or regulations. Be a Respectful and Courteous Guest

Follow all posted rules.

Leave all gates as you found them.

Don’t block gates or roads with parked vehicles.

Don’t shoot towards livestock, buildings or equipment.

Pick up any trash along the way.

If you see the landowner, don’t forget to offer an appreciative thank you!

Hunting Mule Deer In Montana

Finding mule deer in eastern Montana sage and grasslands often mean seeing what’s right there in front of you. Muleys are often open-country deer. They’ll sit contentedly out in sparse cover, brush that barely breaks up their outlines, brush that would make the average whitetail feel downright naked. Montana Hunting Season Dates information above provided by the Montana Department of Wildlife. Before going out to hunt make sure to double-check the rules and regulations on THIER WEBSITE or here!
